About the Yellow Humpy Trout Fly
The Yellow Humpy is a high-floating attractor dry fly built for fast, broken and busy water. Bright, buoyant and easy to see, it is a superb choice when you need a dry fly that will stay afloat through riffles, pocket water, runs and rougher streams.
Its bold yellow body and upright profile make it highly visible in poor light, twilight and unsettled weather, while its bushy construction helps it ride well over choppy water. Although it does not imitate one specific insect, the Yellow Humpy offers a wonderfully buggy silhouette, suggesting a range of surface food including terrestrials, sedges, stoneflies and general dry-fly prey.
This is also a very useful sight indicator fly. Fish it on its own as a searching dry, or use it as the buoyant visible fly in a dry-dropper set-up when prospecting fast water for trout.
Fishing Tips:
Fish the Yellow Humpy where a delicate dry would quickly drown: tumbling runs, broken glides, streamy water, plunge pools and windy lake margins. Its buoyancy allows it to ride high, while the bright yellow body makes it easy to track at distance or in low light.
Use it as a searching pattern when trout are likely to rise opportunistically. It is also excellent as the dry fly in a dry-dropper rig, where its visibility and floatation help support a small nymph beneath.
