When should I fish with the Hare's Ear Halfhog?

This graph shows trends of when fly fishermen use the Hare's Ear Halfhog to fish with and what hooks are most popular throughout the fly-fishing season.

About the Hare's Ear Halfhog Trout Fly

The Hare’s Ear Halfhog is a buoyant and highly versatile dry fly from the Sedgehog family, designed to fish either on top of the water or sitting low in the surface film. Its natural hare’s ear colouring gives it a wonderfully buggy appearance, making it useful as a sedge imitation, emerger, general searching dry fly or even a lightly twitched surface pattern.

This is an excellent fly when trout are feeding confidently near the surface but are not locked onto one exact insect. It can be fished static, allowed to sit low in the film like an emerging caddis, or twitched gently to suggest movement from a struggling sedge. That flexibility makes it a very dependable choice for rivers, streams and stillwaters.

Fishing Tips:

Fish the Hare’s Ear Halfhog dead-drifted over rising trout when sedges or small terrestrials are present. Its buoyant profile allows it to sit naturally on or in the surface film, which is often exactly where trout expect to find emerging caddis and struggling insects.

For stillwaters, try it close to reeds, bankside cover and wind lanes. Leave it motionless at first, then add the occasional short twitch if fish are following but not taking. On rivers, it works well searched through riffles, broken glides and pocket water where a buoyant dry fly needs to stay visible and afloat.

The Sedgehog family is known for buoyant dry flies that can be fished as sedge imitations or general surface attractors.

The Hare’s Ear colour scheme gives this Halfhog a natural, muted appearance, helping it work when trout are wary of brighter or more heavily dressed patterns.

  • Best for: Trout and grayling
  • Imitates: Sedge, caddis, emerger, surface terrestrial or general buggy food item
  • Best conditions: Evening rises, sedge activity, broken water, margins and searching likely lies
  • Fishing style: Static, in the surface film, twitched or skated
