Winged wet flies are designed to imitate the adult stage of an insect during brief times when it may be underwater--mayflies which hatch on subsurface rocks and rush to the surface as fully grown adults, caddis fly adults which dive underwater to lay their eggs.

The Alexandra, or Lady of the Lake, as it was then called, was introduced some time around 1860. It was re-named in honour of Princess Alexandra.
It was such a popular and successful pattern that its use was literally banned on some waters.
If it regained its popularity it would prove to be a very successful fly, as it still does to a few in the know!

It is a drab looking wet fly but has earnt its place as one of the old greats for it has never lost what it takes to kill trout.
The date of this fly's creation is difficult to pinpoint. Evolved from obscure Scottish origins, it is best fished, like the Black Pennell, early in the season as a top dropper, probably taken for a hatching midge.

I invented the Gorbenmac trout fly in 1956 while living in South Africa, wher I fished it with great success in the headwaters of the rivers flowing from the Amatola Mountains. At the time I supplied my customers with flies requiring blue mallard wings such as Butchers, Prince Charming and Red Heckham Peckham. I fished the Cata and Wollf rivers for rainbow and brown trout using the Red Heckham Peckham and Prince Charming catching fish on both.
