Hackled wet flies are designed to imitate the adult stage of an insect during brief times when it may be underwater--mayflies which hatch on subsurface rocks and rush to the surface as fully grown adults, caddis fly adults which dive underwater to lay their eggs.

Originally used in larger sizes as a Scottish dapping fly for both brown trout and sea-trout, The Loch Ordie (or "Wee Loch Ordie" as it is sometimes known) can be used both as a dry fly or as a wet fly on a traditional loch-style multi-fly rig. Tends to be good as a bob-fly in this latter style when fishing a fairly heavy wave from a drifting boat.

The Palmer is one of the oldest of flies. They have been reputedly used through the centuries as caterpillars, freshwater shrimps, nymphs, larva when fished wet; and from midges to moths when fished dry, with proven success.
