About the Foxford Shrimp JC Salmon Atlantic Fly
Foxford shrimp is typical for a spate river
There is a commonly held belief abroad that shrimp flies only work in Ireland and that they are at their best for late summer and back-end fishing. This is not so. Shrimp flies from Ireland have been used with outstanding success in Scotland and the north of England rivers.
As regards the time of year, salmon in a river will take a shrimp fly as freely as any other pattern, when the water is right, from the very start of the season.
Expert Tip:
Certain rules must be observed if shrimp flies are to be fished successfully First, the size must be right. The biggest mistake is to fish too big a fly. Then the fly must be worked to give it life. This is usually done with the rod tip.
In slacker flows the fly should be worked in short darts and in faster flows it should be jigged less frequently around the arc, with the current doing most of the work.
