About the PMD Transitional Emerger Trout Fly

The emerger has proven to be one of my most consistently effective flies . The Transitional Emerger is a design developed in the last couple of years, but because of the trout's reaction to it, it is assuming a prominent place in the box.

Expert Tip:

I seldom tie well-known patterns, preferring to create imitations of the foodforms on which I see the trout feeding. My criteria for a "good" fly design are: the fly must be easy to tie with readily available, inexpensive materials; it must be durable; and it must perform effectively. In recent years as my eyes have aged, I've added visibility as a criterion as well. If the design meets these criteria, the fly is, to my eyes, beautiful.

Dressings

  • Hook : Size 16.
  • Thread : Olive 6/0.
  • Tail : A few woodduck flank feather fibres.
  • Abdomen : Cock ringneck pheasant tail feather fibres.
  • Rib : 7X Dai Riki monofilament, for durability.
  • Thorax : Chartreuse dubbing*.
  • Wing : Pale dun Zelon (shown).
  • Pale dun cul de canard (CDC) may also be used.

* The "chartreuse" (for lack of a more descriptive term) dubbing shown on these flies is not available commercially. It is my own blended colour comprising light and medium olive, yellow and cream rabbit fur developed over about 20 years of studying the insects and fishing this hatch. Various US suppliers offer both natural and synthetic dubbing materials described as "Pale Morning Dun" or "PMD," which are essentially the same. TMC 2487
