Information about Buzzers / Chironomidae flies

Buzzers / Chironomidae are midge pupa; they start life as a bloodworm living in the soft mud found in most still waters. Blood red worms get their colour from the oxygen and haemoglobin held within their bodies. When they are getting near to hatching they loose their blood red colour and take on a more sombre appearance. At this stage they then make their way from the lake bottom up through the water columns to the surface. They swim towards the surface in an wriggling action, stopping either to catch their breath or waiting for the right conditions to hatch. When they stop wriggling towards the surface they slowly sink back down before swimming upwards again. Eventually when they reach the surface, they hang from the surface film and hatch out in to adult buzzers or midge.

Flybox Code:3199

Hook Sizes: 12

Note: You can alter a hooksize or fly after adding it to your basket.

All buzzers start off as bloodworms, a good staple diet of trout. Bloodworms are found in or near the muddy bottom , however they eventually emerger and swim up through the water layers. This pattern is for tempting the trout in the upper layers of water. Allow to sink very slowly as takes are very often taken on the drop. Retrieve slowly with twitching action sufficient to activate tail. John Smith 2007

Serious food for trout! A must have pattern for the flybox. Teenage buzzer midges about to emerge rapidly from the water, when they will be leaving their pupal shucks floating on the surface. The emerging insect wriggles out of its skin the hungry trout see a bulky moving mass. When the insect is standing on the water surface near it's old skin waiting for its blood to pump up it's wings and the sun to dry them out the view from under the surface is still of a tangled mess of old skin and legs. You can now see why a fish will take an interesting looking mouthful of unkempt mess of hairy tied to a hook.

I don’t know who first tied this pattern, my farther was using it some 25 years ago and don’t think it was his design, when I used this fly as a child it was just a hook with some red wool wrapped around the hook shank leaving a tag at ether end, the materials have changed now but the idea is just the same.

I developed this pattern in 1998 as a true to life chirononid pupa pattern and is currently one of my favourites for stillwater. If you compare it to the natural, it will soon become obvious why it works. I usually fish it static or with a very slow 1" twitch on a very long fine tapered fluorocarbon leader. I have found that takes are usually very confident with a long slow pull of the line (unmissable??!!).

White Lake in the Shuswap Region of British Columbia is one of my favorite lakes for big rainbow trout! Even though it is a two hour drive from where I live, I fish this lake several times times a year! Part of the reason, other than the magnificently beautiful setting, the abundance of wildlife, and the clear water with a marl/weed covered bottom, is that the huge rainbow residents can be caught on tiny chironomids if presented in the correct manner! I use a floating line and about a 16 foot leader with a weighted, size 14 chironomid. I try to anchor in 30 to 35 feet of water and cast in to drop-offs where the water depth is around 18 feet. Often, lunker trout can be seen cruising near the bottom when their feeding mode is on! That is when the floating fly line/long leader technique comes into its own, providing that you have the right chironomid such as described below!
