About the Petitjean's Dun Trout Fly
Petitjean’s Dun, also known as the MP10, is a delicate and life-like CDC dun pattern created by Swiss fly tier Marc Petitjean. Designed to imitate an adult upwinged dun sitting lightly on the surface, it offers a beautifully natural profile for trout feeding on hatching mayflies.
The use of CDC-Cul-de-Canard gives the fly excellent natural buoyancy and a soft, mobile silhouette. This makes it particularly effective when fish are feeding carefully on calm glides, slow pools, clear rivers or stillwaters where a heavy or overly dressed dry fly may be refused.
A refined and highly imitative dry fly, Petitjean’s Dun is ideal for matching delicate dun hatches when accurate presentation and a subtle footprint on the water are essential.
Fishing Tips:
Fish Petitjean’s Dun during hatches of small to medium upwinged flies, especially when trout are rising gently and taking duns from the surface. It is best presented on a floating line with a fine tippet and a drag-free drift.
On rivers, cast slightly upstream of a rising fish and allow the fly to sit naturally in the feeding lane. On stillwaters, use it when trout are cruising and sipping emerging duns from calm water. Avoid overworking the fly; its strength lies in its lightness, natural silhouette and gentle CDC movement.
After catching a fish, blot the fly dry and restore the CDC with a suitable dry-fly powder or CDC-friendly treatment rather than heavy liquid floatant.
